Sky: Children of the Light vs Genshin Impact for Couples

Co-op Couple GamesMobile Couple Games

Two gorgeous co-op worlds on mobile, both free, both cross-platform. They are also close to opposites in what they ask of you, and for a couple that matters more than which one is objectively the bigger game.

What each one actually is

Sky: Children of the Light is a social adventure with no combat to speak of. You fly, you explore, you light candles, and the central mechanic is helping other people. You can literally hold hands and lead your partner somewhere. Sessions are short and there is very little to lose.

Genshin Impact is an enormous open-world RPG with a real combat system, character progression and a story that takes dozens of hours. Co-op exists and works, but it is one feature inside a much larger single-player game.

The thing that decides it: pace

Genshin rewards time. If you both have evenings and you both enjoy progression systems, you will get months out of it together. If one of you plays twice a week and the other plays daily, you will drift apart inside the game β€” different story progress, different power levels, and co-op stops being fun because one person is carrying.

Sky has almost no progression gap. Someone who plays every day and someone who shows up on Sundays can do the same things together on the same evening. For most couples that is the whole argument.

Storage and phone

Worth saying plainly: Genshin is a large download and demands a lot from a phone. If either of you is on an older device this decides itself. Sky is far lighter.

Who should pick which

  • You both game seriously: Genshin. Nothing on mobile gives two people more to do.
  • One of you is new to games: Sky, without hesitation. No combat to learn and no way to fail.
  • You want something calm at the end of the day: Sky.
  • Long distance: Sky. Short sessions, easy to find each other, and the whole game is about being near someone.

The compromise

If you want Genshin to work as a couple game, agree one rule before you start: do not progress the main story without the other person. Almost every couple we hear from who dropped it dropped it for this reason. We go into it more in open-world games to play together.

And if Sky appeals, we have a longer piece on what playing it as a pair is really like: Sky: Children of the Light as a couple game.
