Cozy Games to Play Before Bed Together

Cozy Couple GamesMobile Couple Games

The twenty minutes before sleep is the most reliable slot most couples have. It happens every day, you are both already in the same place, and nothing else is competing for it. It is also the slot with the strictest requirements, which rules out most games.

The two things that disqualify a game

It cannot have an ending you need to reach. Anything with a match, a round timer or a run means you are finishing it rather than going to sleep. “One more game” at 11:40pm is how a twenty-minute slot becomes an hour.

It cannot wind you up. Competitive games are the wrong shape for this time. Losing at something right before bed is a genuinely bad way to end an evening, and winning is not much better if your partner lost.

What works

Something shared and slow

Our Flower Garden is close to purpose-built for this. A few minutes of tending, no timer telling you to continue, and you can stop mid-anything. The shared plot also means the last thing you do before sleep is leave something for the other person to find.

One turn of something

Words With Friends 2 or Chess.com on a multi-day timer. Take your move, put the phone down. The game does not care that you stopped.

A quiet lap of somewhere

Sky: Children of the Light for the nights you want twenty minutes of actually being somewhere together. It asks nothing and there is nothing to lose.

A farm check-in

Hay Day works if — and only if — you have both agreed it is optional. The moment it becomes the thing you have to do before sleep, it has stopped being a bedtime game.

A format that works

  1. Phones down at a fixed time, not a fixed stopping point.
  2. One game, agreed in advance, so there is no choosing at 11pm.
  3. Nothing competitive after about ten.
  4. Stop when the timer says, not when the game does.

What not to do

Do not make it compulsory. A bedtime ritual that becomes an obligation is worse than no ritual, and the fix is simply to let it be a thing you often do rather than a thing you always do. More in the first two weeks with a new couple game and making it a daily routine.
