Most long distance advice assumes you already have years of shared history to draw on. Early on you do not. You are still working out what the two of you are like together, and doing it through a phone, which is harder.
That changes what a game should do. At this stage you do not want a shared project. You want something that generates conversation.
Why a big shared world is the wrong first pick
A farm or a shared garden is excellent for a settled long distance couple, because it gives you a quiet daily ritual. In a new relationship it does the opposite of what you need: it is parallel activity with very little talking in it, and it quietly sets up an obligation before you have the footing to say βI did not open it this weekβ without it meaning something.
Start with games that make you talk. Add the long-term thing later.
The first month
Question games
This is genuinely the best tool you have right now, and it needs no app. Would You Rather is the easy entry point β light, funny, and you learn a surprising amount from how someone chooses.
The couple quiz is the next step up, and it has the advantage of being obviously a game rather than an interview.
Something short and silly
UNO! works because there is nothing to learn and a round ends. It gives you something to do with your hands while you talk, which takes the pressure off the conversation in the early weeks.
Month two and three
Once calls are easy rather than slightly nervous, add something with more in it.
The Past Within or Tick Tock: A Tale for Two are unusually good at this point, because they force the two of you to describe things to each other patiently. You find out quite quickly how someone handles being stuck, which is more useful information than another round of questions.
Words With Friends 2 is worth starting around now too β it creates a low-pressure reason to message during the day.
When to add the long-term thing
When you have a rhythm you both trust and nobody would read a skipped day as a signal. That is usually a few months in. At that point a shared world like Our Flower Garden starts doing real work, because it is genuinely nice to log in and find the other person has been there.
Two things to avoid early
- Anything with a daily requirement. In a new relationship a missed day is read as meaning something. Do not give it the chance.
- Anything competitive, for now. You do not yet know how the other person takes losing, and finding out over a video call is a rough way to learn.
